Criteria
Pii believes it can have the most impact in societies where governments are in the later stages of peacebuilding following periods of peacemaking (by governments) and peacekeeping (by military forces).
Our partners are part of a grassroots effort, typically from government, nonprofit, and educational communities.
Our partners have the following characteristics in common with Pii:
- A presence or interest in children's education
- Values, philosophy, and goals involving peace through increased dialogue
- Can raise “matching funds” compatible with Pii
- Committed to neutrality in the local conflict
- Passionate about peace
Some of the criteria Pii applies in evaluating areas for expansion include:
- The Conflict: What is its nature? (nationalistic, ethnic, religious, class/economic, etc.) Scope? Participants? Length/duration?
- The Peace: Status of the conflict? Peace making by whom? Peace keeping by whom? (What military force?) Stage of peace building? (What stage? Who has programs? What are they? At what stage are they? Are they effective?)
- The Children: How are children viewed/valued by government, educational institutions, and various communities? What are the conversations about children occurring there and in what age groups? Are they ignored? Seen as needing help?
- Neutrality: Where is there a stance or precedence for neutrality? Are there programs addressing/advocating/encouraging neutrality or reconciliation? What are they? By whom? Is there an independent voice expressing interest/concern about the well-being of children (older or younger)? Who? Are there any organizations that have a large enough infrastructure or span of influence to reach communities on all sides of the conflict and are they neutral? Who?
- The Media: Can people access it? Who controls it? What is the prevalence/availability of children's programming? Can programming time be purchased or community-sponsored? What are the major audiences? Largest? Smallest? Where?
- Interested Sponsors: What organizations/individuals might be interested in participating in an MIFC to build peace? Partnering in initial efforts for an MIFC (logistical or financial support)? In-country? An independent 3rd party? Interest groups in the U.S. or elsewhere? Long-term sustaining support?
